What is 2FA and Why Do You Need It?
Imagine someone stole your password. Is your account safe? If you have 2FA — YES. If not — you are in great danger.
What is 2FA?
2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) is an additional security layer that requires two different proofs of identity during login:
- 🔑 Something you know — password
- 📱 Something you have — phone code, hardware key
Even if an attacker steals your password, without the second factor they cannot access the account.
How does TOTP work?
The most common form of 2FA is TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password). It works like this:
- At registration, the server generates a secret key and shows it as a QR code
- You scan the QR code in an app like Google Authenticator or Authy
- App and server share the same secret
- Every 30 seconds, both generate the same 6-digit code based on the secret and current time
- You enter the code during login
Key point: the code changes every 30 seconds. Even if someone intercepts it, they cannot use it later.
Why is 2FA important?
The statistics are clear:
- 🔒 2FA blocks 99.9% of automated attacks on accounts
- 🔒 2FA blocks 96% of phishing attacks
- 🔒 81% of hacked accounts did not have 2FA
In 2026, a password alone is no longer enough.
Types of 2FA
1. SMS codes (weakest)
Code arrives via SMS. Not secure because attackers can intercept SMS (SIM swapping). Use only if nothing else is available.
2. TOTP apps (recommended)
Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator. Generate codes offline, without internet.
3. Hardware keys (most secure)
YubiKey, Titan Security Key. A physical USB key you must insert into the computer. Practically impossible to hack.
4. Biometrics
Fingerprint, Face ID. Used on mobile devices.
How to enable 2FA?
Step 1: Choose an app
We recommend:
- 📱 Google Authenticator — simple, synchronized
- 📱 Authy — backup and multi-device
- 📱 Microsoft Authenticator — for Microsoft accounts
Step 2: Scan the QR code
On every site that supports 2FA, in security settings, you will find a QR code. Open the app and scan it.
Step 3: Save backup codes
Every site gives you 10 backup codes. Save them in a safe place — used if you lose your phone.
